10 QUESTIONS WITH SUPER FAN

Here is a new interview with Scott Davis wirter of a bunch of Bluewater titles. His 1st graphic novel is coming out next month.

QUESTION 1:
SUPER FAN: SCOTT, TELL US ABOUT THE UPCOMING COMIC BOOK FROM BLUEWATER PRODUCTIONS “THE ELEMENTALS”
SCOTT: It is inspired by one of Ray Harryhausen's unrealized film projects. It's about a squadron of flying WWI flying aces who get trapped in an unreal world called the Source. This place is dominated by a race of giant bat-like creatures who seemingly keep the universe in some sort of precarious balance. Without giving away too much, mistakes are made, realities and parallel worlds are thrown into chaos and it is up to the Squadron to restore balance and pull the planet back from the brink of Apocalypse. Your typical boy meet bat, boy kills bat, bat destroys the world love story.

QUESTION 2:
SUPER FAN: WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT IN LIFE?
SCOTT: The easy and obvious (and truthful answer) is family.

QUESTION 3:
SUPER FAN: DO YOU LIKE TO DRIVE FAST?
SCOTT: Not NASCAR fast, but I have been known to have a lead foot. But it's kind of hard getting past 85 mph in a '99 Ford Contour.

QUESTION 4:
SUPER FAN: WAS IT HARD TO WRITE “RAY HARRYHAUSEN PRESENTS” 20 MILLION MILES MORE?
SCOTT: I wouldn't say it was hard, but any writing project is a challenge. I always push myself to tell cohesive, entertaining stories that have the right amount of visual action, compelling characters and intelligent dialogue. It sometimes drives Darren nuts that it takes me up to six weeks to write a single issue script. But in my defense, I rarely need to rewrite or change them once they are submitted. The hardest thing about 20 million is that I created three competing story lines that intertwined and had to get them all to meet up in the end. It's one of those things that I wished I had another two or three issues before the finale (in Issue 4) to go deeper.

QUESTION 5:
SUPER FAN: TELL ME YOUR INSPIRATION FOR “THE ELEMENTALS”?
SCOTT: The original spark came from this picture of a WWII pilot battling this bat-like creature in in Ray Harryhausen's art retrospective book However, when I tracked down the original treatment of the story it was far too close to the the plot of 20 Million Miles to Earth, (which was a derivation of King Kong). Because there is no film or book to remain completely faithful to, I pretty much had free reign to create a new universe. So, as a history buff, I moved the setting to WWI where the planes were more aesthetically pleasing (those tri-planes look so cool) and the political and scientific dynamics made a fantastical story more plausible. Plus, I've always wanted to write a good alternative history yarn!

QUESTION 6:
SUPER FAN: HOW MANY RINGS BEFORE YOU ANSWER THE PHONE?
SCOTT: It depends who's calling. I've got Caller ID and it's four rings before you go to voice mail.

QUESTION 7:
SUPER FAN: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
SCOTT: Fry guy at Der Wienerschnitzel back in 1980!

QUESTION 8:
SUPER FAN: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE COMIC BOOK AND CHARACTER?
SCOTT: I've always been partial to Green Lantern. But only the Hal Jordan version. As a kid, I loved the Justice League issues that featured ol' GL as the main character.

QUESTION 9:
SUPER FAN: FAVORITE WORD?
SCOTT: @#!*#!% (at least that's the word I use the most)

QUESTION 10:
SUPER FAN: HAMBURGER OR HOTDOG?
SCOTT: Hamburger, definitely hamburger. In fact, a Double Double from In and Out Burger with grilled onions.
